Nature Field Trip

I was so excited to take pictures at Joe’s field trip. They were able to walk the first graders over and enjoy some nature lessons. Let’s see they learned about the way seeds travel, solar energy, animal adaptation, and much more. Joe was really into it, and even though it was Cyber Monday and I like deals, deals, deals…I love watching Joe learn more!

Perfect

Sunday was a Kick back at home sorta day. I was trying to organize my digital pictures to my hard drive. Hubba worked on the directory and watched football, and the boys played legos all day long. It don’t get much better than that!

Santa wrote back

Santa wrote back and the boys were humming with excitement. They each took turns sitting on a white stool while Hubba read their letter. The letters were very personal and described, in detail, what they had mentioned in their letters to Mr. Claus. Tony’s was read last, and he seemed a little nervous when Hubba started to read if he was on the naughty or nice list!

Aquarium Trip

“You don’t understand anything until you learn it more than one way.” ~Marvin Minsky

Today I was in a funk about my cousin but I knew sitting around the house asking myself why was not useful, so I thought about a happy place. I snapped my fingers and called to Hubba, ‘Let’s take the boys to the aquarium!’ and it was so. We went to the Cabrillo Aquarium in San Pedro. It is a donation only aquarium so you give what you can (I love that). You can see the learning happening in their eyes. Right along with the horsing around

We saw baby pacific seahorses in the aquatic nursery

I saw amazement…that look makes me tear up

I saw an 11 year old you can’t stop moving or talking, stop both and ponder

Then I saw enthusiasm, Joe loved the tide pools, “Mom, mom the sea urchin hugged my finger!” He asked the staff member,” How long do the tide pool creatures live?” His mind was whizzing around like those flower fireworks on the Fourth of July.

I needed that.

He never made a brow look dark

He kept at true good humour’s mark
The social flow of pleasure’s tide:
He never made a brow look dark,
Nor caused a tear, but when he died.
~Thomas Love Peacock

I got the news today that my cousin Chris committed suicide Tuesday night, in the above picture he is the little boy in the yoda shirt. He leaves behind a wife, three kids under 8, a step daughter who lost her way, a Dad who considered him a best friend, a Mom who was so proud of him, a job that he worked hard in college to qualify for, and a whole lot of unanswered questions.
I respected my cousin Chris very much. He was a natural athlete, tall, on the quiet side, he worked very hard. This news leaves a hallow spot in the family tree, one I never thought would be there this way…..just a few weeks after his daughter turned one. So much to look forward to…farewell Chris, I hope the heavens bring you comfort.

Aliso Beach

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” ~Frederick Keonig
The Day After Thanksgiving we went to the beach. It was beautiful. The boys played both individually and together. They threw a ball into the crashing waves, football and wiffle ball with Hubba. They even played at the park at this beach. It’s free, it doesn’t require batteries or plugs, and they have fun every time. I feel real lucky we live close enough to enjoy it often.

Black Friday

I have never done it before. In all my years of being cheap, I have never been at a place where picking at the carcass of retail merchandise sound appealing. I asked around and everyone had a crazy sister-in-law that went to black friday sales but they didn’t go. My neighbor Sherry said she’d give it a try, so we did. We left at 11:30pm and got home at 6am. The first Toyrus we went to, the line was so long and they were making people stand out in the cold we weren’t up for that so we went to a second toysrus and that was smooth sailing. I bought from the boys list, only things that were on sell. Then we went to Kohl’s and found more goodies. It was fun.
