A bird chirped

“Don’t wear perfume in the garden – unless you want to be pollinated by bees.”  ~Anne Raver

It’s not spring,  and yet,  when a bird chirped in a tree as I was getting out of my car,I, in a zombie trance, went straight to the back yard, and planted stuff. I’ve always wanted herbs outside the kitchen window. When a warm summers day allows for the window to be open and the smell of basil and rosemary come in, I will smile a great big happy smile. Unless I kill them first….you see I have a fantasy of being a gardener without the skill! What ever will be, will be…..

secrets and sandwiches

“It isn’t what they say about you, it’s what they whisper.”  ~Errol Flynn

I love a good secret. I don’t even care if I’m in on the secret…..I just love the bond of a secret! Joe’s school buddy just got back from a ski trip up at Mammoth. They hung out all day long….peas and carrots these two…peas and carrots.

Somewhere inbetween a sword fight and Luke trying to handcuff Tony they stopped for lunch.

Jack and Nick joined in the picnic, which led to a food fight, which led to running playing and lots and lots of laughter!

Free-range children

“Like fruit, children are sweetest just before they turn bad”.  ~Dena Groquet

I tried to let the small folk that live at my house be free-range today….it hasn’t happened in so long that didn’t really react well at first. Then I threatened chores if they were having trouble with there free range activities and suddenly they found stuff to do. Nick and Joe picked avocados (about 15) off the tree in our backyard. I’m not sure how they did it because they are short, the tree is tall, but I’ve learned not to question brothers working together for a common good. Free range children tend to have “accidents” like Nick running over Joe with his green machine. Tony whacking Nick with an empty wrapping paper tube(I’m not sure where the tube came from seeing we aren’t out of any wrapping paper)….these things tend to happen and are worked out when left alone. I’m trying not to be a “hover mom” as much anymore. working on letting the critters figure some things out all on their own!….Now that doesn’t mean I’m not peeking, with my camera, on the way to the restroom when it’s been quiet outside for too long!

Yellow leaves are worth a thousand bucks, green leaves are worth a hundred and Nick is the banker. Carrying on little dudes, carry on!

What a difference a day makes…

“The snow doesn’t give a soft white damn whom it touches.”  ~e.e. cummings

birds were really outside chirping when we woke up today. It had to get better, and it did. We got to Big Bear Snow Play right when it opened and the boys couldn’t stop smiling. They were made for inner-tubing!

It was beyond stressful yesterday and I’m soooo glad I have the kind of magical hubba bubba who can turn a crappie situation into a trip the boys will remember as an awesome amount of fun!

As the official family photographer

and documentarian, I have a story to tell of the last two days,  for sure!

“The World is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.”  ~St. Augustine

Now one would think traveling 100 miles one way in a car couldn’t possibly be that difficult… would be wrong. We were running about an hour late on our day trip up to Big Bear. Then upon trying to install the chains on the car we borrowed, we were told they were too big so we had to go back down the mountain to get chains that fit. After we came back from the Walmart in Highland we were now 2 1/2 hours off schedule and we had half the mountain to go and a big problem. The chains, although they fit the tire were hitting the inside tire protector thing….metal on metal….42 miles to go listening to mental on metal, I was crying thinking we were ruining the car we borrowed and it was now, by the time we got there, basically time to turn around and go home. Oh, oh and two cars got in an accident at this point right in front of us, the slushy road made one car swerve right into the car in front of us…like 30 feet in front of us. I am clicking my ruby red slippers, mentally repeating “there’s no place like home”. We drove on and Hubba Bubba would pull over and check the tires every 15 minutes, the second tire check stop, I told the boys to get out and touch snow……These are pictures of my boys very first time in the snow!

For a moment I didn’t feel like vomiting. I was happy that they got to experience snow,  and then we drove on with my tears of fear, metal on metal, and time ticking away.  We arrived in Big Bear at 3:36, we needed to leave Big Bear at 5:00 to make it down without icy road conditions. Hubba Bubba made the executive decision to stay overnight. The muscles in my body relaxed a little and all was well…as well as a day trip with a freaked out Mom that turned into a night trip with a Mom thinking about the ride home the next day could be!

“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.”  ~Franklin P. Jones

running in, out, upside down…oh my! Loud gun noises…..I got you, I got you, … I got you first. I wanted to scream. But I did not. I smiled and folded laundry.I did not blow up and scream, “STOP IT, STOP IT, STOP IT!” Now,  I would like a prize…..I let the boys be boys and I didn’t let the noise meter in my head destroy their fun.

Baking Monday plus Laundry Lego

Baking Monday was not that exciting

Strawberries and melted ghirardelli milk chocolate chips

Tony was into it

Joe went for naked strawberries and Nick passed completely!

I was surprised to find a Lego man hanging on for dear life in the wash machine, well I was amused and not that surprised as Tony’s pants are like clown pants with 10, 000 pockets and I always find something weird in the washer or dryer.
